Cypress Gardens Information |
Cypress Gardens is located approximately 24 miles north of Charleston,
SC, USA. The Gardens, known as the Gem of Berkeley County, offers
visitors the rare experience of being one with nature as they explore
the swamp on flat bottom boats, or by walking on a variety of nature
trails. Visitors are surprised and amazed at the beauty and serenity
of the cypress swamp. The Gardens were once a part of Dean Hall Plantation.
Rice cultivation began around 1720 using the "inland"method. The old
Rice reservoir is now referred to as the Cypress Gardens Swamp. In
1909 Dean Hall Plantation was purchased by Bejamin R. Kittredge as
a hunting preserve. In 1927 he cleared trails in the Bald Cypress
swamp and planted thousands of azaleas, camellias, tea olives, winter
daphne, and daffodils. Cypress Gardens was opened to the public in
1932. Boat rides were an immediate attraction. In 1996 Cypress Gardens
was given to Berkeley County. The County added the Butterfly House,
a Fresh Water Aquarium and Reptile Center, an Antique Rose Garden,
and a Daylily Display Garden. Rental facilities include a Wedding
Gazebo and the Dean Hall Conference Center.
